BC mandates flush toilets on construction sites

BC is requiring that flushing toilets be installed on construction work sites with more than 25 workers.

The move comes after the BC Building Trades union representing construction workers called on the province to add flush toilets. In a press release dated October 12, 2023, the union stated: “Construction workers have been faced with unsanitary and undignified washroom conditions for too long. We need the provincial government to step in and stand up for the people who build this province.”

The recommendation was also included in a report commissioned by the BC Building Trades that details the conditions of construction site toilets. The union has been asking the government to require flush toilet onsite since the pandemic revealed health and safety concerns.

Quebec has mandated similar regulations for flushing toilets on worksites since 2015.
