Federal funding earmarked for First Nations biomass projects

The federal government has announced $13 million in funding for six biomass projects in Northern Ontario. According to NRCAN, the projects will help Indigenous communities reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, decrease emissions and demonstrate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of biomass heating. Funding these initiatives will also increase local indigenous economic development by providing an opportunity to participate in the bioeconomy by using renewable sources of heat, all while creating local employment.

First Nation communities engaged in the project include Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Pikangikum, the Wikwemikong Unceded Territory, Nishnawbe Aski, Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek, Whitesand, and Wahgoshig.
