Stelpro to work efficiently with Hilo

Hydro-Québec’s new subsidiary, Hilo, and heating products manufacturer Stelpro have created a joint venture with a mandate to develop connected devices for smart homes that will contribute to efficient energy use. The devices will be developed in Quebec and manufactured at Stelpro’s plant in Shawinigan, Que.

The joint venture will develop innovative products designed to manage energy use, such as smart thermostats and other connected devices, and will provide them to both partners.

Heating accounts for over 50% of a home’s electricity use. Thermostats are therefore a key tool in the smart management of energy use.

Stelpro president Yves Chabot said, “Creating a joint venture between Hilo and Stelpro is a logical step given our desire to position our company as a major player in the energy transition.

“We are proud to be able to draw on the knowledge we’ve acquired over the past 38 years in electric heating and electronic controls and to create synergies to develop innovative smart home products and services that will allow customers to manage their energy use efficiently.”.

Jonatan Julien, Quebec’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region, said, “This partnership is a wonderful example of the potential economic spinoffs associated with the development of technologies that will help Quebec reach its electrification goals.”
